Oral Surgery

Oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMS) is a specialized area of dentistry dedicated to diagnosing and surgically treating conditions affecting the mouth, jaws, face, and neck. It blends advanced dental knowledge with precise surgical expertise to address concerns ranging from complex tooth extractions and dental implant placement to corrective jaw procedures and the management of facial trauma or pathology.

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons complete extensive training beyond dental school, including hospital-based surgical residencies with rotations in anesthesia, general surgery, and other medical specialties. This comprehensive background allows them to provide safe, predictable care for both routine and complex procedures.

At Perfect Smiles Family Dentistry, we work closely with trusted surgical specialist, Dr. Eric Osmolinski, when advanced care is needed. Our collaborative approach ensures that every patient receives coordinated, comprehensive treatment focused on restoring comfort, function, and confidence. Whether addressing pain, improving bite alignment, or rebuilding oral health, our goal is to support you with expertise, compassion, and personalized care at every step.

Services we offer

  • Wisdom teeth extractions involve surgically removing the third molars, known as wisdom teeth, which often emerge in late teens or early twenties. These teeth can cause issues like impaction, infection, or crowding due to insufficient space in the mouth. The procedure is typically performed under local or general anesthesia by a dentist or oral surgeon. It includes making an incision, removing the tooth from the socket (sometimes in sections for impacted teeth), and closing the wound with stitches as needed. Post-operative care instructions are given to manage pain, promote healing, and prevent complications. Click here to learn more.

  • Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that are placed into the jawbone to replace missing teeth. They provide a strong foundation for fixed or removable replacement teeth that are made to match your natural teeth. The process involves several steps including initial consultation, placement of the implant into the jawbone, healing period (osseointegration), and placement of the artificial tooth or teeth (crown or bridge) onto the implant. Dental implants are considered a long-term solution for restoring your smile and improving chewing function. Click here to learn more.

  • Bone Grafting

Bone grafting is a surgical procedure used to repair and rebuild bone that has been damaged or lost. It involves taking bone from another part of the body or using synthetic materials and placing it in the affected area. This procedure helps stimulate new bone growth and is commonly used in dentistry to support dental implants or repair bone defects caused by trauma or disease. Bone grafting promotes healing, strengthens bone structure, and improves the success of subsequent treatments such as implant placement. Click here to learn more about bone grafting.

  • Tooth extraction is a dental procedure where a tooth is removed from its socket in the bone. It is typically done to address severe decay, infection, crowding, or damage that cannot be repaired. The process involves numbing the area with anesthesia, loosening the tooth with instruments, and gently pulling it out. After extraction, the socket may be stitched if necessary, and post-operative care instructions are provided to manage pain and promote healing.

  • Oral pathology is the branch of dentistry that deals with the study, diagnosis, and management of diseases affecting the mouth, jaws, and related structures. It involves identifying and understanding various conditions such as infections, tumors, cysts, and autoimmune disorders that can affect oral health. Diagnosis often involves clinical examination, imaging techniques like X-rays or CT scans, and sometimes biopsy for further analysis. Treatment may include medications, surgery, or other interventions depending on the specific condition and its severity. Regular dental check-ups are essential for early detection and management of oral pathology to maintain overall oral health.

  • Your comfort and safety are our highest priorities. Sedation dentistry allows patients to feel calm, relaxed, and pain-free during oral surgical procedures. Depending on your needs, sedation can range from mild relaxation to deeper levels that create little to no memory of the procedure.

At our office, we offer two types of sedation:

Nitrous Oxide Sedation (Laughing Gas) – This mild form of sedation is inhaled through a small mask and helps reduce anxiety while keeping you awake and responsive. It works quickly, is easily adjustable, and wears off shortly after treatment, allowing most patients to resume normal activities the same day.

IV Sedation (Twilight Sedation) – Administered intravenously, this deeper level of sedation provides profound relaxation and minimal awareness of the procedure. Many patients remember little to nothing afterward. IV sedation is ideal for more complex surgical treatments or for patients with moderate to severe dental anxiety.

All sedation is carefully administered and continuously monitored by trained professionals. We evaluate your medical history, treatment needs, and comfort level to determine the most appropriate option for you. Throughout your procedure, your vital signs are closely observed to ensure a safe, controlled, and comfortable experience from start to finish. Click here to learn more about sedation.
